For people with Acne
HelloSkin’s experts were not able to find any clinical data on the use of La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo [+] in people with acne. However, the product contains both niacinamide and salicylic acid, which are ingredients shown to be benefit people with acne.
Niacinamide (nicotinamide) is a vitamin of the vitamin B family, and works by inhibiting sebaceous lipogenesis and thereby reduces the sebum production from the sebaceous glands (1). One study has shown that nicotinamide is comparable to topically prescribed antibiotics such as erythromycin and clindamycin (2). In a study of sixty female patients with acne, a 5% nicotinamide gel applied daily for 8 weeks was reported to provide similar benefits as a 2% clindamycin gel. In acne, antibiotics are intended to impair growth of the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, which are present in acne prone skin and lead to inflammatory responses. At the same time, the 5% gel containing nicotinamide was not associated with any side effects (2).
Salicylic acid works partly by preventing clogging of the pores (3). In cosmetic products the concentration of salicylic acid must not exceed 2%. Although side effects from salicylic acid are rare, it is important to look out for signs of irritation, such as redness. If you notice any redness or worsening of your acne, you should consider switching to another product.
The glycerin in the product helps limit dry skin, due to its water-binding properties that enhance the skin’s water holding capacity. Furthermore it supports skin recovery and maintenance of the skin barrier, which is very important for inflammed and irritated skin (4).
This product also contains perfume, which is one of the most common skin irritants that may exacerbate skin inflammation in people with sensitive skin.
