Description

Hollywood Overnight Magic is a gel treatment designed to help clear spots and the associated redness overnight, in people with acne-prone skin.

It contains a combination of salicylic acid, sulfur, and zinc oxide in a specially designed formula that works to clear the pores of congestion from dead skin cells, oil and dirt, and prevent the formation of acne-causing bacteria.

By injecting oxygen into the pores, it cleans the skin gently and helps the skin’s natural healing processes get to work. This creates a clearer, healthier-looking complexion, with less likelihood of blackheads or whiteheads forming.

The gel is said to have a visible impact on spots in as little as one hour, reducing redness and clearing blemishes without scarring. Unlike some acne treatments, it contains no benzoyl peroxide. It is also free of artificial colours, fragrances, and parabens, which can irritate sensitive skin.

Research & Evidence

For people with Acne

HelloSkin’s experts have not been able to find any clinical evidence on the use of Hollywood Overnight Magic in people with acne. However, the product contains salicylic acid, sulfur and lactic acid.

Salicylic acids is an active ingredient typically found in acne products that works by dissolving the intercellular cement that holds epithelial cells together (1), which then helps prevent pores from clogging (2)(3). It is also thought to reduce sebum production (4). Excess sebum production is one of the main factors in acne pathogenesis (5). Salicylic acids is recommended in low concentrations, since it can cause side effects such as local irritation (2). In cosmetic products, 2% is the maximum strength allowed.

However, glycerol which is also in the product, have been shown to support skin recovery after chemical irritation by increasing the water-holding capacity of the skin, which secondarily promotes recovery of the skin barrier (6).

The product also contains sulfur, which has a mild keratolytic effect after being absorbed into the skin cells (1). Thereby sulfur is thought to help remove dead skin cells and excess oil, and consequently prevents clogging of the pores.

The product also contains lactic acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid. Alpha hydroxy acids are believed to help reduce inflammation and remove dead skin cells. In patients with mild-to-moderate acne (both comedonic, inflammatory or mixed) the efficacy of applying a cream with a new mix of alpha hydroxy acids with or without a pharmacological treatment twice a day for 2 months was investigated in a non-randomised open-labelled study (7). The study reported that the cream was well tolerated and that the cream alone, was just as effective as the cream in combination with the pharmacological treatment with the efficacy rated as high in around 64% of the participants in both treatment groups.
