Description

Like other Eucerin products in its dry skin range, DermoCapillaire Calming Urea Shampoo contains a combination of urea and lactate to relieve and protect dry and itchy skin.

This shampoo also includes polidocanol, which acts as a local anaesthetic to relieve itchiness and flakiness caused by dry skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

For people with an itchy, dry scalp, standard shampoos are generally a poor option, as they usually contain potential irritants that further dry out the skin and exacerbate the problem. This shampoo is free of irritants like colours and fragrances, and instead contains ingredients that help to replenish the skin and protect it as it cleanses.

Dry skin is usually deficient in two of the body’s natural moisturisers – urea and lactate. These help to regulate water loss and lock moisture naturally into the upper layers of skin, while also breaking down dead skin cells so that scaly skin is shed more easily.

This shampoo promotes these two actions, to help the skin feel smoother, softer, and less itchy, and improve appearance so that it looks healthier. Its mild action is suitable for most skin types, and will leave the hair with a healthy shine and texture.

Research & Evidence

For people with Psoriasis

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find clinical evidence on the use of Eucerin DermoCapillaire Calming Urea Shampoo in psoriasis. However, the product contains urea, lactic acid and lauromacrogols.

In psoriasis, topical urea has been shown to increase epidermal water content and reduce the loss of water across the skin surface when measured shortly after application (1). A 10%-concentration of urea has also been shown to reduce scaling and redness of psoriatic plaques when compared to the same ointment without urea (2).

Lactic acid also works partly by attracting and binding water, as one of the components in the so-called natural moisturising factor (3). In dry skin conditions, including psoriasis, water loss from the upper skin layer is linked to a reduced skin barrier function, which can worsen the disease symptoms (4).

This product also contains lauromacrogols, which in a leave-on combination product containing lauromacrogols has been shown to reduce itch, when applied 3 times per week for 4 weeks in people with dry and itchy scalp conditions (5).

For people with Eczema

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find clinical evidence for the benefit of Eucerin DermoCapillaire Calming Urea Shampoo in people with atopic dermatitis. However, this product contains urea, which is an important component of the epidermis where it serves to keep healthy skin hydrated by attracting and binding water as a part of the skin’s natural moisturising factor (6). In dry skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis, water loss from the upper skin layer is linked to a reduced skin barrier function, which can worsen the disease symptoms (4).

Furthermore, studies have shown in atopic dermatitis, that the use of urea containing emollients (either 5% or 10%) can reduce disease severity by about 20% after 42 days (8).

The product also contains lactic acid. Lactic acid is also a part of the skin’s natural moisturising factor, the level of which has been shown to be reduced in eczematous compared with healthy skin (9).

Finally, the product contains lauromacrogols. In people with dry and itchy scalp conditions, a leave-on combination product containing lauromacrogols, lactate and urea applied to one half of the scalp 3 times per week for 4 weeks, was shown to significantly alleviate scalp dryness and itching (5).
