Description

The AtoControl Body Care Lotion is part of the Eucerin range that uses the healing power of natural oils to dehydrate and soothe dry, irritated skin. It is suitable for use by people with dry skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and is formulated to treat rough and itchy patches.

Dry skin conditions often cause an ‘itch-scratch’ cycle that exposes the skin to further damage and even infection. It is important to relieve the itching, but the problem is often made worse by many soaps, cleansers, lotions, and moisturisers. These commonly contain irritants such as colours, preservatives, and fragrance.

This lotion is free of irritants, well-tolerated by sensitive skin, and contains ingredients that help to soothe, regenerate, and protect the skin.

Grape seed oil and evening primrose oil are rich in Omega-6 fatty acids. These help to nourish the skin and rebuild the cutaneous barrier that naturally helps to restrict moisture loss; the liquorice extract content in this lotion also provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action to protect the skin cells from damage and relieve redness.

The lotion is a lighter formula than the cream in the same range. It can be used daily all over the body by adults, children, and babies over the age of 3 months. It is a water-in-oil formula that is easily absorbed by the skin, restoring softness and smoothness, and relieving tightness.

Research & Evidence

For people with Psoriasis

HelloSkin’s experts did not find clinical data on the benefits of Eucerin AtoControl Body Care Lotion in psoriatic lesions. However, the product contains glycerin and ceramide-3.

Glycerin is found naturally in the skin where it helps attract and retain water from the deeper skin layers, thereby helping hydrating and moisturising the skin (1). In dry skin conditions, including psoriasis, water loss from the upper skin layer is linked to a reduced skin barrier function, which may be worsening the disease symptoms (2).

Furthermore, in psoriatic skin lesions, the synthesis of ceramides is impaired, which compromises the structure of the skin and leads to skin barrier dysfunction (3).

In a recent study, a ceramide moisturizer that was used as an adjunctive therapy for plaque psoriasis for a period of 8 weeks showed benefits on psoriasis severity and area compared with the group that did not apply the ceramides. Further, with continued use over a year this group also showed less relapse and rebound compared with the control group (4).

For people with Eczema

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find scientific data on the use of Eucerin AtoControl Body Care Lotion in eczematous skin. However, the product contains glycerin and ceramide-3.

Glycerin is found naturally in the skin where it helps attract and retain water from the deeper skin layers, thereby helping hydrating and moisturising the skin (1). In dry skin conditions, including eczema, water loss from the upper skin layer is linked to a reduced skin barrier function, which may be worsening the disease symptoms (2).

Furthermore, in the upper layer of atopic dermatitis skin the level of ceramides is reduced compared with healthy skin (5, 6).

Skin with insufficient levels of ceramides has an increased loss of water across the surface, and thus becomes dry with increased permeability to irritants and allergens which may also exacerbate the condition (7, 2).

In a study with both adults and children with atopic dermatitis, a ceramide containing cleanser and moisturiser that was applied twice daily for 6 weeks, showed reduction in disease severity and itching compared with before treatment (8).
