Description

Csrex Lotion is a smooth, mustard-coloured emulsion used in the treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis of the skin or scalp, as well as eczema and other skin conditions.

Its main active ingredient is coal tar (5% cutaneous emulsion) which gives it a characteristic odour. Coal tar is a known antipruritic and keratoplastic that helps to prevent itching and to soften scaly skin. It also has antiseptic properties that can help prevent infections in skin that is itchy and scratched.

The lotion is suitable for use on the face with caution, but should not be used on broken or ‘weeping’ skin. It can be used to help treat children and the elderly, but in a diluted form. Follow the directions for use (below) carefully.

Csrex Lotion can be used alone or in combination with other treatments prescribed by your doctor.

Ingredients

The acticve ingredient in Csrex Lotion is:

The other ingredients are:

  • Methyl hydroxybenzoate (E218)
  • Propyl hydroxybenzoate (E216)
  • Hydrogenated polyoxyl castor oil
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Ethanol
  • dl-Alpha tocopherol
  • Vitamin F ethyl ester
  • Xanthan gum
  • Purified water

Directions

Csrex Lotion should be applied 2 or 3 times a day to areas of the skin affected with psoriasis or eczema.

Shake the bottle before usage. Prepare the skin by cleansing gently with a non-irritant and fragrance-free cleanser, before patting dry (rather than rubbing).

For adults and children over the age of 12, apply a fine layer of the lotion. Massage it into the skin gently and leave to dry for at least two minutes. If it dries before then, you may need to apply it a little more thickly; if it takes much longer than two minutes, use a little less next time.

For the elderly and young children under 12 years of age, dilute the lotion with a few drops of boiled and cooled water in the hand. Then massage it into the skin gently and leave it to dry.

Always apply the lotion carefully but, if it comes into contact with unaffected areas of skin, it will generally cause no harm.

Precautions

Csrex Lotion is for external use only and care should be taken when using on the face, around the eyes, or near other mucous membranes.

If Csrex is ingested it may require gastric lavage, depending on the quantity involved. If it accidentally enters the eyes, immediately flush it out with clean water or saline solution. Keep it away from children.

The coal tar content may cause skin irritation in some people. If this is the case, ask your doctor to review the treatment and discontinue usage, if necessary. If you have a hypersensitivity to any of the above-listed ingredients, avoid using this lotion and seek an alternative treatment.

Coal tar heightens sensitivity to sunlight. If you have a disease characterised by photosensitivity (such as lupus erythematosus) or an allergy to sunlight, avoid using this lotion.

Hydrogenated polyoxyl castor oil and propyl and methyl hydroxybenzoates may also cause irritation or allergic reactions (these might be delayed).

Do not apply to broken skin with ‘weeping’ wounds or where the skin is clearly infected. Also, do not apply to rectal or anal areas.

Breastfeeding or pregnant women should generally use this lotion only intermittently, in low concentration, on a limited percentage of the body. Avoid using it at all during the first trimester. Do not apply to the breasts before feeding your baby.

Side Effects

Side effects may include skin irritation and photosensitivity of the skin, due to the coal tar content. It may also cause acne-like eruptions. Also reported is an increased risk of skin cancer in people with psoriasis who are treated with a combination of coal tar and UVB radiation. Take this into account when considering long-term treatment.

There are no known interactions between Csrex Lotion and other medicinal products.

Research & Evidence

For people with Psoriasis

In mild to moderate psoriasis, Csrex Lotion applied three times per day for 12 weeks has been shown to reduce redness, induration and scaling, and psoriasis severity compared with a conventional coal tar lotion (Alphosyl) based on a large study with 324 patients. The investigators concluded that the Csrex Lotion was more effective than the conventional coal tar lotion in mild to moderate psoriasis (1).

In another study, Csrex Lotion was shown to be as effective as calcipotriol (vitamin D-analogue) in treating psoriasis after two daily applications for a period of eight weeks (2).

The product contains a complex mixture of fatty acids. These do not appear to explain the benefits of Csrex Lotion, because when compared with a coal tar solution without these fatty acids there was no added benefit in psoriatic skin (3).

Coal tar has a long history for topical treatment in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In a recent overview study, it was reported that 21 of 25 identified studies supported the use of coal tar in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (4).
