Description

AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream is the ‘sister’ cream of the AproDerm emollient. It contains activated colloidal oatmeal, which is known to have moisturising, soothing, protecting, and cleansing effects on skin. It also contains a variety of natural oils derived from apricot kernels, almonds, and olives.

This combination helps provides symptomatic relief of psoriasis, eczema, and other dry skin conditions. The oatmeal and oils work to restore the skin’s natural occlusive ‘barrier’, which helps to keep moisture in by reducing evaporation rates. It also draws moisture from the deeper skin layers to the surface. In this way, dry skin becomes gradually rehydrated and protected, reducing the dryness associated with many conditions, and helping the skin to feel smoother and suppler.

AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream soothes red and itchy skin, reducing scratching and, in turn, making further skin damage and infection less likely. As well as soothing the skin, it has a cleansing action, absorbing dirt and dead skin cells.

The cream can be used as part of a daily routine by infants, children, and adults. Its buffering action helps maintain normal pH levels in the skin; and it contains none of the common irritants found in many commercial skin products, such as parabens, fragrance, halogens, SLS, and colours.

AproDerm comes in a handy airless pump dispenser, minimising the risk of contamination and reducing wastage.

Directions

AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream can be used either before or after bathing, on dry or almost-dry skin.

First wash your hands and then activate the pump dispenser, by breaking the tamper-proof seal; then turn the pump clockwise and press down on the nozzle several times, until cream starts pumping into your hand.

The cream can be applied liberally to affected areas, but smooth it in gently, in the same direction as hair growth. Avoid aggressive rubbing as this could aggravate your condition or cause more irritation.

After applying it, you should see a very thin layer of cream on the skin’s surface, which can be left to dry for around 10 minutes.

Apply AproDerm as often as required and continue to use after your skin improves, as this will help to prevent flare-ups in the future.

Precautions

Keep AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream out of children’s reach. The cream should be used externally only and, if accidentally swallowed, seek medical help as soon as possible.

If in doubt about hypersensitivity, test a healthy area of skin with a small amount of the cream, and leave for up to 48 hours to check for irritation.

If you suspect an allergy to any of the ingredients, avoid use or consult a doctor or pharmacist beforehand. Also seek medical advice if your skin is badly cracked, bleeding, or damaged in any way. Do not use the cream on infected skin.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should be able to use this cream safely, but check with your doctor if in doubt.

Side Effects

There have been no reported side effects of using AproDerm Colloidal Oat Cream and there are no known interactions with other medicines.

Scientific Research

For people with Psoriasis

HelloSkin’s experts have not found clinical evidence of the use of colloidal oatmeal in people with psoriasis.

However, a colloidal oatmeal skin protectant lotion has been shown to improve skin dryness, scaling, roughness and itch intensity in healthy women with mild to moderate itch and moderate to severe dry skin (1).

Another study also found that a colloidal oatmeal emollient had significant benefits on people with extremely dry skin compared with its vehicle (2).

Finally, colloidal oatmeal formulations as adjunct treatments in atopic dermatitis have been shown to improve eczema area and severity index, itch, dryness as well as quality of life indices (3).
