Westlab makes a large collection of therapeutic products, all based on the use of high-quality mineral salts for skin repair, muscle relief, and body cleansing.
The company was established in 2004, soon after the founders discovered the wide range of benefits of mineral salts in helping to manage their son’s eczema – especially their magnesium content. Their mission was to ensure that high-quality, magnesium-rich salts could be available to everyone who needed them.
The salts used by Westlab in its range include Himalayan salt, which was thought to be formed from an inland sea created around 800 million years ago; magnesium chloride deposits from the Zechstein Sea, which was an inland sea in the area of the UK, Netherlands, and Denmark, formed 250 million years ago; Dead Sea salt, which has been used by people as far back as the ancient Egyptians for its therapeutic properties; and Epsom salts from Surrey, which started to become popular in the 1600s.
As spa treatments have become more popular globally, Westlab has taken advantage to bring part of the spa experience into home bathrooms.
The brand’s premium quality pure mineral salts are packaged in several different forms in its range: 100% pure Dead Sea Salt, Himalayan Salt, and Epsom salts are sold in packets for adding to bath water or to footbaths; tubs of pure magnesium flakes are also for dissolving in the bath; tubs of 100% pure Dead Sea mud are designed for application all over the body as a mask; small pots of body scrubs and soaks are made from a mixture of the salts and natural oils; and packages of body cleansers, skin repair ‘supersalts’, and muscle relief ‘supersalts’ are also available.
There is even a Westlab Kids version of the Dead Sea Salts, so most of the family can use these products – though pregnant and nursing women should first check with their doctors. The products are all free of additives and irritants, and the body scrubs contain no microbeads, which can also irritate sensitive skin.
The mineral salts and mud soothe, fortify, soften, detoxify, and revitalise the skin. For people with psoriasis and eczema, the high concentration of minerals such as chloride, magnesium, sodium, calcium, potassium, bromide, sulfate and bicarbonate found in the Dead Sea mud and magnesium flakes often have a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin. The magnesium content is known to help the skin retain water and act as a natural moisturiser, improving the skin barrier function, and helping to protect the skin.
These health-giving properties and benefits for the skin have attracted not only people suffering from psoriasis, eczema and other dry skin conditions. Quite a lot of media interest has been generated and medical professionals have become more interested in the products. Celebrities too have been talking about mineral salts and, increasingly, athletes have been using them to relieve aching muscles after training or competition.
Westlab has quickly become the leading UK producer of therapeutic skincare products using pure mineral salts, imported from prime locations around the world. It has also grown beyond the UK into other markets, notably in Europe, Asia, and the US.
Based out of Cranleigh, in Surrey (the home of Epsom salts), the company has grown quickly as the UK population and the international wellness community has become more aware of the benefits of using mineral salts while bathing, cleansing, and soaking.
