Moisturising the skin is essential for treating dry skin. If the lipids of the upper skin layers are gone or destroyed, an increased water evaporation from the skin will lead to the skin feeling and looking dry. Dry skin is more likely to itch, get cracked or react to irritants such as unwanted ingredients and bacteria. This is why it is of high importance to moisturise the skin and thereby contribute to maintaining the natural barrier of the skin. Moisturising emollient products sometimes contain active ingredients, that are known to bind water or add extra lipids to the skin, which leads to decreased water evaporation from the upper skin layer. Furthermore, moisturising products make the skin feel softer and gives a more cosmetically pleasing appearance.
