Lauromacrogols

In emollients, lauromacrogols are usually added because of their anti-itch properties. Lauromacrogols are chemically what is called polyoxyethylene ethers, which are prepared by the polymerisation of ethylene oxide with lauryl alcohols.

Pros:

+ May be helpful for some types of itching

Cons:

+ A study shows that not all types of itching are reduced with lauromacrogols

What our experts find

HelloSkin’s experts could not find any clinical data on lauromacrogols in psoriasis. However, in people with dry and itchy scalp conditions, a leave-on combination product containing lauromacrogols applied to one half of the scalp 3 times per week for 4 weeks, reduced itching [1].

In another study where different types of itching were experimentally induced in human volunteers, lauromacrogols were found effective itch-reducers in some but not all types of itching [2].

Lauromacrogols can function as local anaesthetics, and studies have shown that lauromacrogols can inhibit the formation of new smaller blood vessels, which can reduce blood flow to a lesion and therefore influence redness in the skin as shown in lab models and controlled animal experiments [3].
