What does science say?

Our experts at HelloSkin were not able to find evidence of colloidal oatmeal on people with psoriasis. However, extracts of colloidal oatmeal has shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in lab models and in animal itch models [1] [2], which can limit the inflammation in the skin [3].

Also, colloidal oatmeal skin protectant lotion has been shown to improve skin dryness, scaling, roughness and itch intensity in healthy women with mild to moderate itch and moderate to severe dry skin [1].

One study also found that the colloidal oatmeal emollient compared with its vehicle had significant benefits on people with extremely dry skin [4]. Further, colloidal oatmeal formulations as adjunct treatments in atopic dermatitis have been shown to improve eczema area and severity index, itch, dryness and quality of life indices [5].
