Alphosyl 2-in-1 Shampoo is a medicated and fragrant shampoo used in the treatment of scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, scalp itch, and dandruff.
It is manufactured by Belgian company, Purna Pharmaceuticals NV. The company specialises in the manufacture of non-sterile liquids, such as solutions, emulsions, and suspensions, as well as creams, ointments, and gels, and its products are used widely in the pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical industries.
Alphosyl 2-in-1, however, is marketed as part of the range of over-the-counter medicinal products represented by Belgian-based company, Omega Pharma.
Its active ingredient is coal tar, a thick dark liquid that is proven to help relieve the symptoms of psoriasis, such as itching, redness, and scaling.
In fact, a recent overview study found that 21 of 25 identified studies supported the use of coal tar in the treatment of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
Coal tar has long been used in shampoos to help people fight scalp psoriasis, scalp itch, eczema, dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and even head lice. It has antipruritic and keratoplastic properties that help to soften scaly skin, as well as relieve itch.
Specifically, Alphosyl 2-in-1 Shampoo contains 5% of an alcoholic extract of coal tar to help relieve scalp irritation. Relieving and preventing itch is not only important for comfort reasons for psoriasis and eczema patients; it can also help to prevent the ‘itch-scratch cycle’ that leads to excessive scratching, breaking of the skin, and infection resulting.
Bleeding or weeping skin may also prevent the use of many skin treatments for psoriasis or eczema, potentially worsening the condition and resulting in other complications.
Alphosyl 2-in-1 shampoo helps to break this cycle, restoring suppleness to the skin, either on its own or in combination with other medications prescribed by your doctor.
Some extra precautions should be taken before you use Alphosyl 2-in-1 shampoo, due to the coal tar content. Skin irritation and photosensitivity of the skin are known side effects of using coal tar and this product should not be used by children under the age of 12. Note that the shampoo is also not suitable for use on pustular psoriasis, where blisters form on the skin.
Omega Pharma is itself a subsidiary of the global Irish-US pharmaceutical company, Perrigo Company LLC, which acquired it in 2014.
From its headquarters in Nazareth, Belgium, Omega Pharma markets a number of medicinal products that do not require a prescription to acquire.
Alphosyl sits alongside almost 2,000 other brands represented by Omega Pharma. Around 10,000 brand registrations around the world demonstrates that it is a global player.
Its product range includes many established brands such as Predictor, Davitamon, Galenco Baby Skincare, Biodermal, and Dermalex. Such products have been sold over the counter since the early 1970s and are well-trusted. Indeed, you will probably know Dermalex if you are a psoriasis or eczema sufferer and have spent some time on the HelloSkin site already.
Other well-known products in the UK include Solpadeine, Nytol, TCP, Jungle Formula, and Zantac. The company’s dermatological product range include medical products, as well as a range of cosmetic products. It also specialises in cough and cold medication and anti-parasitic treatments (such as head lice treatments), as well as vitamins, minerals, supplements, and natural remedies.
