Christmas is upon us once again! For many people it is a time to indulge and relax. But for someone with psoriasis, it can be a challenge. Here are some tips to make the holidays a little easier.


Plan ahead to avoid stress

Although psoriasis is caused by a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors, a range of research suggests that stress responders may make up to 78% of psoriasis patients and stress has a proven role in several dermatological conditions . There are several simple steps you can take to minimise stress factors during the festive season.

To avoid crowded roads, always allow plenty of time to complete your journey and plan a route that avoids known traffic hotspots.
Worried about your budget at Christmas? Set a spending limit for gifts or suggest a Secret Santa approach. There are several strategies to avoid over-spending and financial stress at this time of year, and good planning is key.

Avoid alcohol

This is probably one of the most difficult times of the year to avoid alcohol, which may lower treatment response rates and has dangerous side effects when combined with psoriasis medication, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. The link isn't clear cut, but as a potential trigger factor in psoriasis flare ups it's wise to limit the amount of alcohol you drink. There are a number of sensible approaches you can take to limiting alcohol at this time of year, including being portion savvy by opting for a small glass and alternating soft and alcoholic drinks. A spritzer, for example, can be festive, or simply opt to be the designated driver so your friends aren't tempted to ply you with alcohol.

Be sensible about temptation

Turkey is a great choice for Christmas dinner as it's low in fat, and if you load your plate with vegetables and salads you'll eat well and healthily without feeling you're missing out. Whatever you do, don't assume that a miracle diet or supplement is the way to deal with your psoriasis. If cutting out a particular food works for you, then do it. But what works for one person may not work for you. Instead, stick to your healthy eating plan  and you'll avoid those excess Christmas pounds into the bargain!
